Having a safe holiday season

Writer: WAL writerWAL writer

Decking the halls with pets presents challenges.

Trees love to be climbed and chewed upon. We've woken to a toppled tree, ornaments shattered and cats scattered. Fortunately no animals were hurt. Now, we make sure our tree is secured to the wall.

Ribbon, string and bows can choke pets. Store them away safely and remove them from presents if necessary.

Candles need to be out of reach too. Battery operated candles are a safe alternative.

Festive favourites like holly, mistletoe and poinsettias are poisonous and can harm our furry friends. Consider artificial holiday plants instead. Check out our blog on 10 Houseplants That Are Safe and Non-Toxic To Our Pets

Having friends and family over for the holidays is fun but can stress our pets. Exercise your dog before the party begins and provide a quiet, safe space for your cats if they aren't keen on all that socializing. Puzzle treat balls, rip-and-reveal plushies, and many other brain puzzles and interactive toys are on the market and will stimulate your pets' senses. Fill a Kong toy with peanut butter and freeze it. This will provide hours of enjoyment for your dog. Any holiday treats for pets should be specifically made for pets. You don't want your dog nosing through the trash and coughing up a potentially deadly turkey bone.

Have a happy and safe holiday with your pets.
