Easter Martini

Xocolatl

Four thousand years ago in Mesoamerica (present-day Mexico) one of the first civilizations, the Olmec, fermented the sweet pulp of the cacao fruit into a ceremonial drink.

Mayans combined the highly valued cacao beans with chilli peppers, honey or water. The Aztecs believed the cacao beans possessed magical and divine qualities, drinking the beverage at ceremonies. The beans' value was greater than gold and was even used as currency.

In 1585, Spain began taking the chocolate for themselves and other European countries soon followed. In Europe, the Aztec chilli chocolate drink evolved into hot chocolate, flavoured with cane sugar and cinnamon. Today's chocolate is not like that of the 16th century, but combining chocolate and spirits has an ancient history.

Our Easter martinis pay tribute to chocolate, spice, cream and spirits. Trinity, our first martini, blends 1oz of Irish whiskey cream liqueur, 1oz of vanilla vodka and 1oz of chocolate flavoured vodka with 2-3 dashes of cardamom bitters. The creamy sweet vodka mix explodes with the warmth of cardamom and cinnamon. Top it with shredded chocolate to heighten sweetness. For an even sweeter, smoother experience, try our Easter Chocolate Martini. We switched out vanilla vodka for creme de cacao and it's like drinking a boozy Cadbury's Easter Creme Egg. Cheers!

Homemade Cocktail Bitters

Bitters elevate a cocktail, and with many micro distilleries producing a variety of flavours like Topshelf bitters, home mixologists have a lot to play with.

We opted to make our own bitters and found an easy project with a great result. It also makes an ideal gift for our mixologist friends.

Chocolate, cardamom and cinnamon give our Easter martinis both a warm and rejuvenating sensation while contrasting with the icy coolness of the chilled glass and iced spirits.
